This publication is the work of Omelyan Dovganych, a Ukrainian historian, researcher, and public figure. The book is a thorough historical study of the tragic fate of the defenders of Carpathian Ukraine. It covers in detail the Hungarian occupation of Carpathian Ukraine (starting March 15, 1939) and the subsequent repressions against members of the Carpathian Sich and the government of Avgustyn Voloshyn.
As the study highlights, the creators of Carpathian Ukraine faced a catastrophic fate: many died in battle (such as on Krasne Pole), others were executed by the Hungarian occupation authorities or sent to concentration camps, and after 1944–1945, they fell victim to Soviet repressions, often ending up in the Gulag.
This work marks the first time biographical sketches and references for all ambassadors of the Soim (Parliament) of Carpathian Ukraine have been compiled. Nearly half of them were repressed, and no prior biographical information about these individuals had been published. Only after Ukraine gained independence did scattered articles begin to appear in the press, but until now, comprehensive biographical data for all the Soim ambassadors had not been collected.
Page 1 features a dedicatory inscription with the author’s autograph: "To the Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Kyiv (signature)." Page 16 features a photo fragment from the exhibition "Carpathian Ukraine: In Search of a Historical Destiny, 1938–1945." This exhibition was created by the National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 (now renamed the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War. Memorial Complex). Because the author and publishers were unable to locate photo portraits for every deputy of the Soim of Carpathian Ukraine, the publication utilizes individual photos cropped from a poster published in the 8th volume of the Works of V. Grendzha-Donsky, which consequently affected their visual quality.
