War: Inverse Perspective

23 August 2024

This exhibition attempts to cover the history of the Second World War and the russian-Ukrainian War through artistic reflections. The curators have chosen artworks depicting various imagery and ideas, reflecting the most tragic periods of Ukrainian history.

The project showcases works by 41 contemporary artists from various regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro, Lutsk, and Ivano-Frankivsk, as well as 40 artists whose works are part of the Museum’s collections. More than 150 exhibits cover an area of almost 2,000 square meters inside the pedestal of the Motherland Monument.

Oleksandr Roitburd, Matvii Vaisberg, Heorhii Senchenko, Arsen Savadov, Anton Logov, Roman Minin, Nazar Bilyk, Albina Yaloza, Rustem Skybin, and others—each of them reflects on their present in their work. Next to them are the works of Ukrainian artists that depict everyday life and the consequences of the Second World War.

War: Inverse Perspective allows us to examine the reality of the past war from a distant viewpoint. This helps us understand the causes of current events and imagine what may happen in the future. It is a large-scale artistic experiment aimed at rethinking the history and present of the Ukrainian people during armed conflict with the aggressor. The project consistently compares the art and records of the Second World War and the russian-Ukrainian War, highlighting the shared trauma and hope of current and past generations of Ukrainians.
