“A Capital’s Uncertain Fate: The Defense of Kyiv in 1941”

Events / 11 July 2026

The summer of 1941 became one of the most tragic periods in the history of Kyiv. The Ukrainian capital found itself at the epicenter of one of the decisive battles of the Second World War on the Eastern Front.

During the interactive lecture, you will learn about the key stages of the defense of Kyiv and explore these events through the lens of contemporary research. We will discuss how the city prepared to defend itself against the forces of Nazi Germany, why, despite fierce resistance, the Red Army’s defensive operation ended in catastrophe, and what myths surrounding those events still persist today.

After the lecture, you are invited to join a thematic tour of the Time Capsule exhibition section, dedicated to the defense of Kyiv. There, you will have the opportunity to see unique museum artefacts related to these historic events.

Admission: included in the museum entrance ticket.

Curator: Ihor Buchma.
