Behind the Monument’s Facade: The History of the Complex

Excursions and interactive events / 10 August 2025

Today, the "Motherland Monument” and the memorial complex of the War Museum carry a completely different meaning than they did in the 1980s when they were constructed. Learn how a site originally meant to glorify the Soviet victory in World War II has become a symbol of the Ukrainian people’s courage and resilience in the struggle for freedom.

The tour will guide visitors through the story of the Memorial Complex’s creation, the narratives the Soviet authorities tried to embed in it, its meaning after Ukraine gained independence, and its rethinking during the Russian-Ukrainian war. We will also share interesting facts about the replacement of symbols on the shield of the "Motherland" monument and about the Memorial’s modern role as a place of remembrance of World War II.

Admission: 100 UAH (schoolchildren and students), 150 UAH (adults)
Curator: Tour guide Rostyslav Dudenko
