Partisan Warfare in Ukraine: The Resistance Continues

Events / 20 October 2026

On 20 October at 14:00, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War will host ‘Partisan Warfare in Ukraine: The Resistance Continues’, an event that brings together young people and Volodymyr Zhemchuhov, a Hero of Ukraine and a participant in the Ukrainian partisan resistance during the Russian-Ukrainian War.

14 October 1942 is regarded as the symbolic date of the founding of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) during the Second World War. The struggle for Ukrainian independence continued into the early 1960s. Since 2014, Ukrainians have once again had to fight against russian occupiers using every available means, including partisan warfare. To mark the 84th anniversary of the founding of the UPA, the War Museum invites visitors to explore the history of Ukrainian armed resistance through the lens of the ongoing russian-Ukrainian War and trace the continuity of the struggle for freedom.

During the meeting, Volodymyr Zhemchuhov will speak to young people about Ukrainian civilian and armed resistance since the beginning of russian aggression in 2014. He will discuss opposition to the annexation of Crimea, resistance to the seizure of government buildings in southern and eastern Ukraine, and the activities of the Ukrainian underground resistance movement in temporarily occupied territories between 2014 and 2026.

Participants will have the opportunity to view photographs and video footage, as well as learn about information gathered by Ukraine’s security and intelligence services, including the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) and the Special Operations Forces (SOF), and by Ukrainian media. Particular attention will be paid to the methods used by russian security services against the Ukrainian underground resistance, both historically and today.

Why do Ukrainians resist? How have the forms of resistance evolved across different historical periods? What connects the fighters of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army in the twentieth century with today’s Resistance Movement? Join us to explore these important questions together.

Admission is free.
