Sunflower in honour of foreign defenders of Ukraine

Museum Life / 14 November 2025

The War Museum was visited by Diego Sacco (“Mars”), a soldier and volunteer from Portugal, who has been serving in the ranks of the International Legion since the first days of the full-scale invasion. He presented a model of a memorial dedicated to foreigners who fought for Ukraine.

The project envisions the installation of a monument in Rava-Ruska. The composition is adorned with a symbolic sunflower placed in a rifle barrel – an homage to the revolutionary tradition of Portugal, when citizens inserted flowers into rifle barrels as a sign of peace during the country’s democratic transition. The height of the memorial will reach 3 meters.

Along with the model, Diego also donated to the Museum’s collection the flag of the organization Memorial – International Volunteers for Ukraine, which he represents. This flag and the model will be preserved in the Museum as a tribute to foreign soldiers who gave their lives for the freedom of Ukraine.
