On 10 March at 13:30, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War will host a screening and discussion of the film “Taras. Return”, directed by Oleksandr Denysenko. The event is dedicated to the 212th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth.

The romantic-dramatic film “Taras. Return” tells the story of the last three months of Taras Shevchenko’s exile in Kazakhstan. According to the screenplay, the poet receives news from his friends in St. Petersburg that he has been pardoned by Tsar Alexander II. However, the military command of the Novopetrovsk Fort is in no hurry to inform Taras of this or to issue the order for his release. Moreover, a secret agent arrives at the fort from St. Petersburg and attempts to do everything possible to ensure that the poet remains in exile forever.

The screenwriter and director of the film “Farewell to the Desert” (the working title at that time) is Oleksandr Denysenko. The film’s screenplay won the International Screenplay Competition dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth in 2012. The film was produced by InsightMedia Producer Center (Ukraine) and Tanaris Production (Kazakhstan), with the support of the Odesa Film Studio.

During the event, we will discuss the Ukrainian people’s centuries-long struggle against russian imperial domination and the roles of prominent figures in this struggle, including Taras Shevchenko.
