Workshop «The book and its structure»

Events / International Cooperation / 29 July 2025

In July, the War Museum hosted a three-day international workshop «The book and its structure». It was conducted by Johanna Fries Markevich, a coordinator of international cooperation of the National Archives of Sweden.

The participants were specialists from leading Ukrainian museums and archives, in particular institutions that take care of unique collections of manuscripts, old prints, graphics and other artifacts on paper: National Reserve «Sofia Kyivska», National Reserve «Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra», Taras Shevchenko National Museum, National Museum of Literature of Ukraine, Central State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art of Ukraine, Museum of Books and Printing of Ukraine.

Over the course of three days, participants explored the history of book forms from papyrus scrolls to modern binding, mastered three basic book sewing techniques, and even created their own books using historical technologies. The focus of the workshop was practical knowledge about storage, paper materials and their care, which is especially relevant in conditions of increased wartime risks.

The War Museum has once again become a space of international dialogue, knowledge and inspiration. We are proud to be part of a community that preserves cultural heritage and shares international best practices in museum work.
