“Are Our Gates Truly Muscovite?”

A new museum study about Kyiv Fortress

The publishing house has already brought a new publication that reveals the pages of its own museum history. Two gates of the old Pechersk Fortress have been preserved on the territory of the Memorial Complex. Today, they function as museum space, yet their past hides many mysteries.

Museum researcher Tetiana Pshenychna conducted a thorough study, collecting all available documentary evidence about the military engineering objects of the Kyiv Citadel of the 17th-19th centuries. She focused on the origin of the two gates that became known as the “Muscovite Gates”.

This erroneous name of the Ukrainian monument became the starting point for the research and is reflected in the book’s title, as the author challenges established, but inaccurate perceptions.

How was the Kyiv Citadel created? Which plans were successfully implemented in the 17th - 19th centuries? How did the role of Kyiv’s defensive structures change in the life of the city?

Read the answers of these questions, archival discoveries and fascinating details of the “fortress detective story” in the publication “Are Our Gates Truly Muscovite?”

The book can be purchased at the Museum’s ticket office.
