On December 22, on Sunday, at 14.00, the War Museum invites you to learn how Christmas was celebrated around the world during the two world wars.
As part of the project “Ukrainian Christmas tree toys: from the 19th century to the present day,” researcher Maria Banko will give a lecture, “Christmas on Fire: Winter Holidays during World War I and II”. She will discuss how Christmas was celebrated on the front lines, in military hospitals, and bomb shelters. She will explore what was cooked for Christmas dinner in Europe and the United States and what gifts were exchanged during the most challenging times.
A separate part of the event will be devoted to the traditions of Ukrainian Christmas at the front and rear. You will hear and see how the traditions were formed and how new trends of the winter holiday are being born amid the russian-Ukrainian war. Before the lecture, Maryna Lukianova, curator of the exhibition “Ukrainian Christmas tree toys: from the 19th century to the present day,” will give guests a personalized tour of the exhibition.
