Cultural representations of Crimea and Crimeans

Our partners / Discussions / 26 January 2025

On January 26 at 14:00, the War Museum and the Mission of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea will host a discussion about the cultural representations of Crimea and its residents.

In the conditions of the temporary occupation of Crimea, we need to maintain a mental connection with the Ukrainian Crimea, filling it with meanings and symbolism. Crimea holds different significance for everyone. For some, it is the home they dream of returning to. For others, it is a place of memories, a page from a history textbook, or a plan for the future. We all imagine Crimea differently, but everyone has their own image, associations, and answers to the question: What is Crimea?

The event will be a platform for discussing different visions of Crimea and Crimean identity in Ukraine. What is Crimea like for Crimeans? What is Crimea associated with for those who have only been to tourist places or those who have not yet had the opportunity to visit it? How did Ukrainians see Crimea in the past? How do we imagine Crimea after the liberation?

List of expected speakers:

  • Nariman Dzhelial — deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people
