"From World War II to Today’s War: How to Describe the War from a Ukrainian Perspective"

Аs part of the "Book Arsenal – 2025" program, a public discussion titled "From World War II to Today’s War: How to Describe the War from a Ukrainian Perspective" will take place.

Speakers:

  • Yurii Savchuk, Director General of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War;
  • Volodymyr Viatrovych, People’s Deputy of Ukraine, Director of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance (2014–2019);
  • Vitalii Nakhmanovych, Leading Researcher at the Kyiv History Museum, co-author of the Babyn Yar Memorial concept, researcher of genocidal practices;
  • Mykhailyna Skoryk, Deputy Mayor of Bucha (2021–2023).

Moderator:

Roman Kabachii, Senior Researcher at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.

Discussion topics will include:

  • What parallels and analogies exist between World War II and today’s russian-Ukrainian war?
  • Is there a historical continuity between Ukraine’s First and Second Liberation Struggles and today’s resistance to russian aggression?
  • What significance do the post-WWII introductions of the concepts of genocide and crimes against humanity in international law have in holding russia accountable for genocidal practices against Ukrainians in the 21st century?
  • How extensively are the war crimes of WWII represented in academic and popular literature, and how does this influence public understanding of the current war?
  • What was the "Ukrainian Question" before and during WWII, and what is it today?
