Heritage: A Space for Work

Our partners / 18 August 2025

On August 18, 2025, the War Museum hosted participants of the capacity-building and networking program for local cultural practitioners “Heritage: A Space for Work,” implemented by the Kharkiv Literary Museum, Mystetskyi Arsenal, the Odesa National Art Museum, the Izolyatsia Foundation, and the Center for Contemporary Culture in Dnipro, with the support of the Partnership for a Strong Ukraine Foundation. The event provided an opportunity for a professional gathering of museum specialists, researchers, and cultural managers from across Ukraine. The discussion focused on war heritage, the interpretation of contemporary conflicts, and the transformation of museum narratives.

The Museum presented its approaches to museum interpretation and presentation of the Russian-Ukrainian war through its exhibition projects. Following the tour of the exhibitions, a discussion was held, moderated by Oleksandra Kovalchuk, Deputy Director of the Odesa National Art Museum and co-founder of the NGO Museum for Change. Among the speakers were the Museum’s Deputy General Directors, Yurii Horpynych and Dmytro Hainetdinov, as well as Museum Project Curator, Maryna Bohush.

The discussion addressed such topics as the representation of the Russian-Ukrainian war in the Museum’s exhibitions and the rethinking of past wars through the lens of the current struggle against Russian aggression. It also highlighted the importance of decolonizing and decommunizing memorial spaces.

The Museum extends its gratitude to the organizers and participants of the event for their attention to its work and for their fruitful cooperation.
