Money of War: The Economy of Ukrainians under Occupation (1941–1944)

What did the money of occupied Ukraine look like? Who printed it, and what can be read between the lines on Nazi banknotes?

The War Museum invites you to the second lecture-discussion in the series “Money of War.”

Andrii Boiko-Haharin, Doctor of Sciences in History and Senior Curator of the “Money Museum” Department of the Communications Division of the National Bank of Ukraine, will speak about the history of Ukraine’s monetary circulation during the Nazi occupation (1941–1944).

Participants of the event will learn about:

  • monetary circulation in the interwar period;
  • the issuance of war bonds and lottery tickets as a means of financing the war;
  • occupation karbovanets and the financial system of the Third Reich;
  • the system of rationed supply of essential goods for the population;
  • OUN and UPA bofony (insurgent coupons).

The lecture will be illustrated with artifacts from the War Museum’s collection – ration cards, coupons, banknotes, and bofony.
