OLES HONCHAR — A MAN AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF AN ERA

Events / 26 April 2025

Once, he was a system favorite, a Stalin Prize winner, and an author of classic school books. Later, he took a stand against the official narrative by resigning from the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). This is the path of Oles Honchar, a Ukrainian writer, World War II veteran, and former prisoner of war. Today, the work of this writer is being rethought.

At the upcoming Museum Book Club meeting, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, we will discuss Oles Honchar’s short story "Modry Kamen." This poignant tale tells the story of a wounded Ukrainian soldier who seeks refuge in a Slovak village and experiences a brief but profound love. The narrative is filled with themes of silence, the fear of war, and fragile human warmth.

We will examine Honchar’s role during and after the war, the fate of prisoners of war, the involvement of partisans, and the contributions of Ukrainians to the liberation of Europe.

Price includes the entrance ticket and guided tour: 150 UAH (adults), 100 UAH (pupils and students)
