Andrii Boiko-Haharin, Doctor of Historical Sciences and Senior Curator of the Museum of Money Department of Communications at the National Bank of Ukraine, will explore the history of Ukraine’s monetary circulation during the period of the Ukrainian Liberation Struggles (1917–1921).
The lecturer will shed light on little-known aspects of the history of Ukrainian currency:
- How was the Ukrainian national currency formed?
- How did the hryvnia and karbovanets coexist?
- What were “shahy,” and what denominations did they have?
- Was currency exchange possible?
- Who were the people — the authors and artists — behind Ukrainian banknotes?
- What were the artistic design features of banknotes in the early 20th century?
- How widespread was counterfeiting during the First World War and the Liberation Struggles?
The lecture-discussion will be moderated by Olena Datsiuk, Senior Research Fellow at the Museum.
