Ukrainian Rescuers: Heroes of the Past and Present

Events / 14 May 2026

On 14 May 2026, at 11:00, the War Museum will host an event dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of Ukrainians Who Rescued Jews during the Second World War.

During the meeting, we will discuss the phenomenon of rescue, the moral choices individuals faced during wartime, and how the memory of the events of the Second World War is being reinterpreted through the experience of the contemporary Russian-Ukrainian war.

To date, 2,713 Ukrainians have been awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations. This is the fourth-highest number in the world. The War Museum continues to collect stories of people who, risking their own lives, saved others during the Nazi occupation.

Among the event’s guests are Anatolii Tartakovskyi and Olena Palamarchuk, children of Lidiia Savchuk from the Vinnytsia region, who together with her parents sheltered the Jew Isaak Tartakovskyi. Joining the discussion will also be Oksana Chertsova – lecturer at the Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, volunteer from Bucha, and representative of the Nikolaienko family, recognized as Righteous Among the Nations of Babyn Yar. She will share her personal experience of surviving the Russian occupation of the Kyiv region in 2022.

Participants will draw historical parallels between the events of the Second World War and the contemporary Russian-Ukrainian war, discuss changes in the perception of the memory of victims and heroes, and reflect on the role of humanity during times of historical catastrophe.
