November 1st is a special date in the modern history of Ukraine. On the night of November 1, 1918, officers of the Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen and Ukrainian servicemen of the Austro-Hungarian Army occupied government buildings and strategic sites in the city of Lviv, establishing control over the city. With the support of local communities, Ukrainian authority spread to most settlements in Galicia.
These events led to the establishment of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic (WUPR) — a vivid testament to the desire of Ukrainians on both sides of the Zbruch River for their own statehood.
During the lecture, we will discuss:
- The prerequisites for the revival of Ukrainian statehood in the Western Ukrainian lands;
- The circumstances of the November Uprising and the formation of the WUPR;
- The establishment and development of the new state;
- Foreign policy challenges and the Polish-Ukrainian War of 1918–1919;
- The Unification of the WUPR and the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UPR).
