On May 12, the War Museum hosted a public lecture by Dr. Greg Mills – Director of the Brenthurst Foundation (South Africa), strategic development advisor to leaders of several African nations, conflict researcher, and co-author of The Art of War and Peace.
The event, titled “What Happened in 2022? What Might the End of the War Look Like?” offered a profound analysis of the causes, course, and consequences of the russian-Ukrainian war in a global context.
At the beginning of his talk, Dr. Mills noted that he visited Ukraine 13 times – 11 of which were after the start of russia’s full-scale invasion. According to him, the Kremlin’s biggest miscalculation was its deep misunderstanding of the evolution of Ukrainian society. After the Revolution of Dignity, Ukraine underwent a transformation that Moscow ignored. A long history of colonial oppression and tragic historical experiences shaped the unity demonstrated by the Ukrainian people.
Dr. Mills emphasized the direct connection between the security of the entire European continent and Ukraine’s survival. For Ukraine, the narratives it communicates to the world are critically important for maintaining international support.
In conclusion, he stressed that Ukraine’s victory requires a clear strategy, long-term support from allies, mobilization of internal resources, and societal resilience. The theory of victory lies in the ability to unite partners, maintain trust, build a wartime-resilient economy, and communicate effectively in the global information space. These factors will enable Ukraine to withstand the current challenges and shape its future on its own terms.
The Museum extends its heartfelt thanks to Dr. Mills for the insightful lecture. We look forward to meeting again in a peaceful Ukraine – after victory!
