Lidiia Tartakovska (Savchuk), a Righteous Among the Nations, a person of great courage and goodness, passed away at the age of 101. During the Nazi occupation, she, along with her parents, saved the Jewish man Isaak Tartakovskyi. The young man, mobilized at the beginning of the German-Soviet War, was captured near the village of Orzhytsia (now Orzhytsia settlement in Lubny District), Poltava Region, but managed to escape from the prisoner-of-war camp and ended up in Vinnytsia. He found shelter and salvation in the Savchuk family home.
After the war, fate brought Isaac and Lidiia together again—they accidentally met in Kyiv in 1951. Thus, a love was born that became the foundation of their future life. The Tartakovsky couple subsequently raised two children—son Anatolii and daughter Olena.
In 1995, Stepan and Nadiia Savchuk and their daughter Lidiia Tartakovska (Savchuk) were among the first Ukrainians to be awarded the honorary title of Righteous Among the Nations by the Yad Vashem Memorial.
The War Museum had the honor of working with the Tartakovsky family—a well-known Kyiv art dynasty. The family's story and Tartakovsky's artworks have been exhibited multiple times at the War Museum's exhibitions, telling the story of the Holocaust in Ukraine.
The story of the Savchuk family's rescue of the future famous artist is presented on the “Portraits UA” resource and remains a part of the Museum's educational events—as a testimony to the power of humanity, love, and light that prevails even in the darkest times.
🕯️ Eternal memory to Lidiia Tartakovska (Savchuk) – a woman in whose heart goodness prevailed.
