Olenivka – a crime without a statute of limitations

Our partners / Conferences / 2 August 2025

On the night of 29 July 2022, a powerful explosion occurred on the territory of the colony in the temporarily occupied village of Olenivka. At least 53 people were killed in the overcrowded barracks where Ukrainian prisoners, including Azovstal defenders, were held. More than 130 others were injured.

According to the russian version, it was a “strike by the Ukrainian armed forces”, but all available evidence, including the conclusions of independent experts, indicates a deliberate terrorist attack organised by the russian occupiers to destroy Ukrainian heroes who have become a symbol of invincibility.

Three years have passed, but there has been no accountability for this crime. Not a single international tribunal. Not a single name of the perpetrator. That is why memory is our tool of resistance and drawing the world’s attention to russia’s war crimes.

The programme of the event:

- 14:00 - presentation of the exhibition of the released prisoners photos

The author - Tara Kurushkina - will personally present a series of photos taken after the return of Ukrainian soldiers from captivity.

- 15:00 - conference “The memory of Olenivka will not fade”

- 17:00 - screening of the documentary film “Men of Steel” and discussion with its director Serhiy Fomenko

About the film. “Men of Steel” is a documentary film that collects footage proving russian war crimes: burnt cities, destruction, mutilated bodies of soldiers and civilians. Particular attention is paid to the memories of veterans who took part in the heroic defence of Mariupol, including Denys Prokopenko, Ilya Samoilenko, and Orest Kozatsky.

The event will be moderated by Volodymyr Zhemchugov, a participant of the russian-Ukrainian war, Hero of Ukraine, and Museum researcher.
