1,000 Cranes – One Dream

Children at the Museum / Excursions and interactive events / 9 August 2025

A family workshop based on the ancient Japanese art of origami, marking the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Participants will learn about those tragic events through the story of a Japanese girl, Sadako Sasaki. After receiving a critical dose of radiation, she clung to hope by folding traditional paper origami cranes. Since then, this bird has become known not only in Japan but around the world as a symbol of peace and children’s hopes for a safe future.

This story takes on special meaning in the context of the ongoing russian invasion of Ukraine, as Ukrainian children are forced to endure the hardships of war caused by the criminal aggression of the russian federation.

The interactive part of the session will involve participants folding their own paper origami crane as a symbol of our memory and our striving for a just peace.
