Exhibition «Redefinition»

The Soviet coat of arms, removed from the shield of the "Motherland" monument, is now a museum artifact. The replacement of symbols on the highest sculpture in Europe became the most noticeable moment of the decommunization processes in our society and redefinition of the entire Memorial complex. This summer, by the 32nd anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine, we succeeded in what seemed to be impossible for decades – freed ourselves from the symbol of totalitarianism and oppression. Now this outdated coat of arms is a part of our history, but it no longer defines our present.

The exposition reveals the most interesting facts from the Trident history, draws attention to the most important stages of its evolving into the state coat of arms. Exhibition center of the Museum. “Defenders”

The project “Defenders” is about the brave, courageous, steel, steadfast, strong, heroic, beautiful ones. There are expressive pictures of the Ukrainian warriors, who have been fiercely resisting the total evil for over a year, defending homeland and protecting the safety of Europe and the world.

The photos were taken during the museum expedition, which took place in July 2022 with the support of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Director General of the Museum Yurii Savchuk and the museum photographer and volunteer from Sweden Andrzej Markiewicz made a trip to the locations of military units. Being in the sites of units on the territory of the Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Odesa and Kyiv regions, the museum team photographed service members of various types and branches of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Thousands of kilometers were covered along the frontline, the majestic images of the warriors were caught on camera.

The details of each image are perfectly recreated. The best photo lab of Sweden and Europe Crimson provided the highest-quality printing of the pictures on the free basis.

Here they are, near us, our knights in the uniforms of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Look into each one’s eyes and pray for them. Mentally thank the warriors for you being alive. Thank for Ukraine!

Lower Moscow Gate
Wartime Talismans

The exhibition focuses on the extraordinary stories of ordinary things that served as talismans. They belonged to the residents of Ukraine who found themselves in the midst of the bloody social and political cataclysms of the mid 20th century and the current Russian aggression against Ukraine. The presented artifacts reveal the uncommon fates of their owners and describe the circumstances of living through past and modern global upheavals.

Soldiers' talismans and family relics, icons and prayer books, letters, children's drawings, and memory photos... They helped their owners to withstand, survive, and overcome the ordeals of the Second World War, the horrors of the Nazi occupation, and Stalin's repressions and not lose faith in people and justice. They accompany and inspire us today in the fierce struggle against the Russian aggressor for our freedom and dignity, for independence and state sovereignty.
